An Interview with Tom Siebel on CBNC.com

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, CNBC spoke with Tom Siebel and other leading executives from Chevron, Toyota, Delta, Cisco, and Blue Bottle Coffee who are creating next-gen models and products, and reinventing how business gets done.

Siebel has been at the forefront of computer technology since the days of mainframes and punch cards. From working at Oracle when it was only a startup, to founding his own companies, most recently C3.ai, he’s consistently been on top of innovation in the industry. Siebel has a reputation for both being outspoken and being right, and C3.ai has been on CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list, which ranks the most innovative private companies disrupting the economy, for two years in a row.

In his new book, Digital Transformation, Siebel says that the corporate world is in the middle of a mass extinction, with 52 percent of Fortune 500 companies from the year 2000 no longer in business today. His point is simple: Companies need to adapt to the digital world or die.

CNBC recently visited C3.ai’s headquarters in Redwood City, CA and received a behind-the-scenes look at some of the innovative technology in progress. Staffers set up a demo of one of its new AI applications, using a camera to capture eyeball images and using software to analyze alertness levels. The technology, which could be used in autonomous cars or with any machine operator who needs to stay awake, told the cameraperson that he was fatigued. It was correct.

The video series, which is now available on CNBC.com, features Siebel discussing how AI and IoT are driving sweeping changes across various industries. He also shares his thoughts on the $11 trillion impact of digital transformation, the potential of precision medicine, and the possibilities created by wearable and embeddable devices.
