C3 IoT was a major participant at the AI Frontiers Conference in Santa Clara this week, where leading data scientists and AI practitioners convened to discuss cutting-edge AI research and development, the technologies and products for applied deep learning, the success of current large-scale implementations, and trends driving the fast-emerging applications of AI to industry.
Renowned data scientist Zico Kolter delivered a mainstage presentation about “Deep Learning and the Digital Transformation.” Kolter described the shift under way in virtually every industry based upon ubiquitous sensing (IoT), hugely scalable computing, vast amounts of data, and artificial intelligence. He explained that C3 IoT has developed a platform to enable this digital transformation, allowing customers across multiple industry sectors (manufacturing, healthcare, oil and gas, energy, aerospace, financial services, and more) to realize the potential of their investments in big data, cloud computing, and remote sensing.
The role of deep learning within this platform, Kolter added, provides the “algorithmic glue” to extract value from these components. He described the use of deep learning in “non-traditional” settings (that is, domains that don't involve images, speech, or language), and highlighted C3 IoT’s successful application of deep learning to detecting electricity theft from smart meters, predicting failures in utility distribution networks, forecasting well failures in oil fields, and optimizing inventory and supply chain optimization.
Kolter joined C3 IoT as Chief Data Scientist in 2014. He is also a faculty member in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where his research focuses on the integration of advanced modeling techniques and optimization into deep learning architectures. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2010, and was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT from 2010-2012.
